Advertising on Social Networking Websites
From LoveToKnow SocialNetworking
Advertising on social networking websites can help grow a business whether it's a small one or a large corporate business. Depending on which social network you decide to pursue when promoting your product or business, marketing could be expensive, inexpensive or free. You can even use some of the networking sites that you already visit.
Advertising on Social Networking Websites: Exposure
Finding a website that can give you the best exposure can be difficult, so what's the best way? Just go where the numbers are.
- Facebook has over 250,000,000 users that are active each day. This is a huge number to target, especially if you have a budget to do so. After creating an ad, it appears on profiles and pages that are relevant to users. For example, if you sell rare books and there are users that collect rare books, your ads are likely to appear on those user's pages and any pages they are friends with. You can set your budget, which affects how often your ad appears. Also, you can try a "pay per click" method or "pay per 1000 impressions." This is up to you, but if you figure that your ad will become popular you may want to use the 1000-impressions option.
- MySpace - Advertising on social networking websites MySpace works similarly to Facebook. You set up your ad and pick how you want to pay for the amount of times it appears and is clicked. You can target your marketing a little better than Facebook by picking gender, age, hobbies, interests and more. MySpace has specific ads that can benefit a small business, musicians, bands, comedians and film makers. That way, you don't have to use one generic template that may or may not make sense depending on your reason for marketing.
Free Advertising
You can get free advertising for you small business, band, product or other interest you are trying to promote. How is this done? Well, many of these social networks allow you to create a special page for a business or a band or something similar. Instead of gaining friends, like you do for your personal social networking site, you attempt to reach "fans." In the beginning, it may be a slow road to getting some fans and you probably will have to self-promote on your personal profiles in order for others to reach your professional one. There's nothing wrong with this. It's a good way to get started.
Once you start gaining popularity, the best way to continue the growth trend is to make sure you keep up with your page and update it with new information, news or changes. That way, you can project a policy of consistency, which fans and customers love. Fresh content will keep them coming back to your site and telling friends about it.
Target the Market
Certain markets will get you better results when advertising on social network websites. The so-called evergreen markets like books, movies and music are popular for advertisers to hit. Millions love to read; millions love music; millions love movies. That's not to say that other markets are not worth advertising for. You have to find a niche and stick with it. Find out the groups that you can cater to. Locate those forums you can consistently post on. Find the message boards which fit your marketing campaign and get communicating. Some other popular marketing topics:
- Cars
- Dating
- Technology
- Health and weight loss
Don't Be Annoying
Be consistent, but not overwhelming. Inundating a message board with the same promotion or news is counter-productive. When you fill up a user's page quickly, they won't have time to check out their friends' posts. Communicate about once a day on your business page or more if you have significant changes upcoming. The more you post doesn't necessarily mean the more visitors you get; it's possible you could be banned because you are simply being annoying with your marketing.
