EBuddy Web Messenger
From LoveToKnow SocialNetworking
eBuddy web messenger offers a convenient way to stay in touch with all of your online friends.
About eBuddy
eBuddy was first known as e-Messenger when it came on the instant messaging scene in 2003. It is an online service that makes online conversations easier and more convenient by allowing you to log in to a web interface to access multiple messaging programs. eBuddy is also available in two versions for handheld devices, including PDA's, cell phones, and portable game systems such as the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable; one version requires you to download a messaging program and the other version allows you to use eBuddy through the system's web browser.
Using eBuddy Web Messenger
The web messenger offers access to the following instant messaging programs:
- MSN Messenger
- Yahoo!
- AIM
- Google Talk
- MySpaceIM
You can log in to each service individually, or create an eBuddy account to access multiple instant messaging accounts at once. However, you will have to sign up for an account with the original service before you can log in at the eBuddy website.
Users can perform many of the same functions offered in a traditional downloadable instant messaging program, such as adding and grouping contacts, creating a chat room for group discussions, changing the color and style of your type, and setting up message notifications.
eBuddy is a constantly evolving product. Visit the company's blog for the latest news and features.
Why Use Web-Based Instant Messaging
Everyone has a favorite instant messaging program. If you have three friends on AIM, four on Yahoo!, and two on Google Talk, it can be a hassle to log in to each and every program to chat with them. Multi-client messaging systems make it easier to keep in touch.
Web-based instant messaging systems offer portability. No matter where you are and what computer you are using, you can stay in touch. All you need is Internet access and a web browser with Javascript capabilities, or you can also use the programs on your mobile phone or other handheld device. They're great to use when traveling or visiting friends and family.
If you share a computer with another person, using a web-based messaging service can give you additional peace of mind against potential snooping. While downloadable IM programs save your password and records of past conversations, you don't have to worry about this when you're chatting in a browser window.
These sites will sometimes allow you to bypass filters at work or school. Networks using firewalls may not allow you to download actual instant messaging programs, and these sites eliminate the need to do so. If a website such as AIM.com is blocked through your local network, you may still be able to log in through a larger messaging site, provided your IT department is unaware of it.
However, even if eBuddy web messenger makes it possible for you to circumvent the rules, it doesn't mean you should. Instant messaging programs are likely blocked to prevent distractions and increase productivity. Is it worth getting a detention to talk to a friend in study hall? Is it worth getting fired from your job for making plans for the weekend? Use the site responsibly to make the most of your online communications.
Other All-in-One Messaging Options
eBuddy isn't the only service offering users the ability to log in to multiple messaging services at once. Meebo and RadiusIM are two similar sites. If you are looking for an all-in-one system that works outside of a web browser, Trillian and Miranda are two downloadable options. They don't offer the portability and flexibility of the web-based services, but they will still provide the convenience of being able to use multiple instant messaging programs in a single interface.
