Example of Social Networks
From LoveToKnow SocialNetworking
LinkedIn is good example of social networks on the Internet, as is MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and more. In fact, during the past decade, social networks have been used for a variety of reasons. These include adding business connections, making friends or simply expressing creativity. However, while there is some overlap between business and pleasure social networks, certain sites are geared for specific needs.
Example of Social Networks for Business
If you are planning to use an online social network for business purposes, there are a few factors that should be taken into consideration.
- The popularity of the network
- The ease in connecting to other professionals
- The ability to create a detailed personal profile
While there are many social networks that fit these criteria, you should also consider the nationality of the majority of the members. For example, if you want to make business connections or seek a job in the US, then it doesn’t make sense to join a network based in Japan.
Although relatively new to the scene, Ryze is an example of social networks that are geared towards making business connections. Once you become a member, you can join specific network groups that correspond with your areas of interest. Networking on Ryze is relatively simple. You simply join a group and start making connections.
LinkedIn makes networking a bit more challenging. Once you join, you can only make connections with people you know. However, if there is someone that you would like to know, there may be a possibility that they are connected to one of your connections. In this case, you can ask for an introduction or a recommendation. While this may sound difficult, learning how to use LinkedIn can help you build a respected professional reputation.
Social Networks for Photographers and Videographers
There was once a time when photo-sharing websites were simply used to upload pictures. In recent years, many of these, such as Flickr have turned into social networks. Members of Flickr can discuss each others photos, and even form groups that revolve around a specific theme. Examples of these themes may include
- Outdoor activities
- Specific locations, such as a state, city or country
- Amusement parks, such as Disney
- Children
- Animals
Some groups or extremely sophisticated and formed based on color themes or special types of photography. While Flickr is for photographers, YouTube is an example of social networks for videographers. Just like Flickr, YouTube allows you to comment on other people’s videos, and join groups based on video themes. YouTube also has a great feature that enables you to post your favorite videos on other social networking websites.
Networks for Connecting with Friends
Some social network websites focus on connecting with people you already know. They provide an easy way to keep friends updated about your current status. Unlike MySpace, your conversations will occur in real time. For example, if I post “Lisa has a cold,” within 10 minutes, five people may respond by saying “get better,” drink some tea,” drink some vodka,” etc. In general, conversation these websites are short and to the point. Examples include Facebook and Twitter.
Networks for Making New Friends
While MySpace is can be used for making connections with friends, it’s also a great way to meet new people. Your ability to do this depends on how interesting you make your page, your blogs and your photos. You can use the MySpace search function to seek out people who may share your interests. Additionally, you can join groups of like-minded people.
Although MySpace was first designed for teenagers, it now boasts popularity with people of all ages. However, many baby boomers prefer a social networking site for people their own age. Enter Eons, which describes itself as “lovin’ life on the flip side.” Eons is deigned for folks over 50 who have maintained their zest for life. It functions in a similar manner to MySpace, with the ability to join groups, post blogs and make new friends.
Now that you’ve seen a few examples of social networks, you have a better idea of which is best for you. Online and onward you go!
