Facebook Logo
From LoveToKnow SocialNetworking
Facebook is designed in part to help people connect with people from their high school days, and the Facebook logo is almost as simple as life was "back in the day." The white and blue color combination and the completely unfussy font make the logo a throwback to the days of part-time jobs, a brand new license, and fun in the sun.
What Is a Logo?
In case you're not familiar, a logo is the way a company identifies itself. It's the combination of pictures and letters—usually along with the company name—that makes it recognizable at first glance. The colors, shapes, and design all set a "tone" for the product or business, and that is how that business represents itself to the world. So a logo, though small, says a lot. Think of it as marketing shorthand.
My Markets has a checklist of things that make a logo good. See if you think the Facebook logo measures up. Here are a few of the guidelines My Market lists on its site:
- Must be visually appealing
- Must identify and distinguish the company
- Has to appeal to the targeted audience
Read on to determine whether you think Facebook looks good, communicates well, and speaks to its designated audience in a way that makes it an effective logo. Consider what the product is, the shape of the logo, the font, the font color, and the overall appearance of the logo. Considering the massive number of members, we'd say it's a hit.
And Facebook?
Facebook is a social networking opportunity on the Internet that allows you to join groups (based on high school, college or other affiliation). If you're familiar with another online networking site, [:Category: MySpace: A Place for Friends|MySpace]], it's similar to that. You can upload photos to share with everyone, send out notes and updates about your life, add videos to your page, and more.
The Facebook Logo Shape
Simple. Rectangular. One shade of blue. Simple advertisements go so far in marketing. It's an unobtrusive logo that serves to connect friends around the world. Since the Facebook logo isn't too bright or flashy, one can say that it's visually appealing and serves to identify the brand to its target audience. The target audience includes everyone from young teens to at least millennials (maybe even older), so a simple design is best: A crowd pleaser, if you will. Would a hot pink logo with yellow letters communicate the same thing? It would probably just draw in the younger, feminine set. Blue and white, though, can appeal to most crowds equally. The geometric shape will do the same.
What the Font Says
The easily recognizable Facebook logo is meant to portray the brand. It's meant to help viewers immediately recognize the brand without having to look too far into the advertisement. What it says is simply, "Facebook." In some cases, you may only see an "F" in the appropriate font. Again, simplicity wins. It says what the company is in an easily readable font, and it appeals to the masses. The font, like the background to the logo, stays away from harsh colors (it's white).
The font is called Klavika and is easy to read at with one quick look. In addition, the white letters really pop against the unobtrusive medium-dark blue background. All letters are lowercase, including the F.
The Bottom Line
The Facebook logo does just what a logo should: It plainly presents the brand and implies what it has to offer. It's appealing (or at least not overwhelming) to the eye, so it can attract the attention from people of all age groups. In general, one glance at a the little blue box with white lettering will remind you of the little spot on the internet where social networking is possible—you can connect with your old high school buddies, reminisce with your college pals, and make new contacts.
