LiveJournal Secrets
From LoveToKnow SocialNetworking
If you've ever had a burning desire to tell the whole world a dirty little secret that's been tucked away in the back of your mind for many years, then LiveJournal Secrets is the blogging community to join.
What Is LiveJournal Secrets?
LiveJournal is a popular and growing Internet community filled with blogs created by its community members. These "journals" form the foundation of each community, and each site, have various social networking features such as comments, a forum, and other methods users can use to communicate and participate in online discussions. LiveJournal secrets was one such community that quickly grew in popularity due to the fact that so many other "secrets" websites on the Internet were growing as well. Communities that feature "secrets" posted by users continue to expand and grow. They are very unique communities and it can be difficult to understand their purpose unless you're part of the community itself.
Communities of "Secrets"
Throughout the Internet, communities, blogs, and forums continue to pop up that offer Internet visitors and opportunity to reveal their deepest and darkest secrets within the safety of anonymous posting. One thing that differentiates these online communities from others is that most of them adhere to a fascinating format where the user doesn't simply write a post and click "submit." When a member of the community feels the need to share a deep, dark secret, they create a postcard which typically features some image or artwork as a background. In the foreground is the text that reveals the users deepest secrets.
The History of LiveJournal Secrets
LiveJournal Secrets was more commonly known as LJSecrets during it's peak in popularity. The community started as an offshoot to the highly popular "PostSecrets" site, and experienced two years of activity and a rapidly growing user base. However, as the community grew and time went on, some of the "bad" secrets started to draw the attention of the administrators of LiveJournal, a community called "LJ Abuse." The LiveJournal Secrets community was becoming a community where members were insulting and harassing each other with insulting and disparaging comments. By 2008, the community was completely shut down by LJ Abuse administrators. Community members and founders branched off and started other Secrets communities.
Other Versions: LiveJournal Secret, PostSecret, and More
LiveJournal Secrets was only one version of a much larger phenomenon that has swept the Internet since 2004 when PostSecret was founded. The PostSecret community members would create their own postcard featuring an image or artwork, and over the image they would print their deepest secret that they had never revealed before. Obviously many submissions are sexual or criminal in nature, but other secrets include secret confessions of love or hate, as well as other deeply meaningful comments about life, and lessons that we learn as we travel through it.
- A man named Frank Warren created the PostSecret blog in 2005, and it is respected by many as a massive online art gallery. The blog is updated every week with 20 new art "secrets." By 2008, this community based on secrets has expanded into a discussion forum with over 39,000 registered users and a comments section where visitors can respond to the secrets. PostSecret continues to grow as one of the more popular websites on the internet.
- Another community called LJSecret was founded in 2005. With just over 21,000 "watchers" following the updates, LJSecret is one of the closest competitors to PostSecrets. The format for this particular art form is also the same, however the content at LJSecret tends to be a bit less reserved than PostSecret, and each update is labeled "You are about to view content that may not be appropriate for minors."
- Conducting an internet search for "post secrets," you'll find a huge number of copy-cat sites that now offer the same approach as PostSecrets, using the same general format for the art on each "postcard."
Final Words
There is something therapeutic for many people about sharing a deep and dark personal secret to the entire world using the Internet. The therapy may actually be exhibitionist in nature, but on the flip side of the coin, there are thousands of voyeur-type members of these communities who log in to read the latest updates of secrets that are posted. The history of these websites are based on the culture of art communities, which are generally unstructured and unmoderated with a very strong believe in every person's freedom to express themselves. This is likely what draws so many thousands of people to these websites.
