MySpace Widgets

From LoveToKnow SocialNetworking

You’ve set up your ultra-cool MySpace page, and now you want to add some MySpace widgets. In case you don’t know, widgets are embedded chunks of code, which point your readers to various forms of content on your MySpace page. Since this content is not always visible on the front page, MySpace widgets are crucial to the success of your site. Widget code might be composed of JavaScript, Adobe Flash plug-in or Windows Media. The type of code you use will depend on where the widget is leading. For example, JavaScript may lead to additional text, whereas Adobe Flash plug-in or Windows Media might lead to a video or music file. However, keep in mind that MySpace does not allow the use of JavaScript, so when choosing MySpace widgets, avoid javascript.

Finding MySpace Widgets

A Google search for "MySpace widgets" will bring up close to 23,400,000 results. Some will be useful and some will be pure spam. Here are some of the better choices.

  • Widgets Lab: Widgets Lab divides its widget list by categories, such as music, videos, maps and weather. Some of the widgets are for any type of blog, while others, such as Funny 4 MySpace, are MySpace specific. Just be warned: Some of the links do not work.
  • Widget Box: Games and interactive widgets seem to be the major focus of Widget Box. Those with too much time on their hands should check out Bubble Wrap. Aside from the games and silly time wasters, this site links to a truly useful widget. The PDF converter widget instantly converts your documents into PDFs. This can be quite useful on many levels.
  • [ http://creative.myspace.com/design/myspace/paypal/faq.html PayPal Fundraising Widget]: Are you involved with a non-profit organization? Do you want to raise funds on MySpace? The PayPal Fundraising Widget is the perfect solution. Since eighteen currencies are supported, it’s a great way to gather donations from all over the world!

MySpace Apps

MySpace has its own gallery of widgets known as "MySpace Apps." You can find it by going to your main page, logging in and clicking on "Edit My Profile." You’ll find the MySpace Apps link on the left side of the page. While the selection of widgets is interesting, there is one problem; you need to add the application to your page before you can try it out. As such, you might end up with a bunch of widgets that you don’t need, but you can always remove them later on. Nevertheless, here are some descriptions:

  • Mafia Wars: Can you be the Godfather?
  • Texas Hold’em Poker: This is the classic Poker game.
  • Always Style, Always on Sale: Find high fashion at low prices.
  • Pimp my Ferrari, Mercedes, BMW, etc: Get lots of widgets to pimp your ride.
  • Chocolate Gifts: This widget enables you to send chocolate to your friends. It’s sure to be popular, at least with your friends.
  • Twilight Gifts: Twilight fans will love using this widget to send gifts to fellow Twilight enthusiasts.
  • Virtual Cat-Adopt Now: If you want a cat but don’t have time for the upkeep, a virtual cat is the perfect solution.
  • Prayers: Post prayers and prayer requests for your MySpace Friends.

Pros and Cons of Using Widgets on MySpace

Before you run off and put hundreds of widgets on your MySpace page, consider the pros and cons. On the positive side, widgets make your MySpace page more user-friendly. They add fun and excitement to your page, and may increase your page views. However, not all browsers support all of the widgets. This can be extremely frustrating. You also want to be careful about making your MySpace page seem too busy, which can be distracting from your basic content. As always, avoid widgets that some people may find offensive. In summary, used sparingly and with discretion, MySpace widgets are a great way to add some pizazz to your MySpace page.
