About Rosie O'Donnell

Rosie O'Donnell was born and raised in Long Island, New York. Born into a large Irish family, she is the third out of five brothers and sisters. When the budding comedienne was 10, her mother died of cancer, leaving her father to raise his young family as a single parent. O'Donnell has stated that after her mother's passing, she took on the role of the "mother-figure" for her younger sisters. Not allowing the tragedy of her mother's death or the burden of taking on a maternal role for her younger sisters, Rosie O'Donnell was very active and well liked in high school. So much so, that she was voted homecoming queen, class clown and senior class president.

Early Career

Taking the stage for the first time at the age of 16, Rosie O'Donnell knew that was where she wanted to be. She dropped out of college in order to pursue her desire to be a comedienne, auditioning for the show Star Search. After a successful run on the talent show, she landed a recurring role in the 1980s sitcom Gimme a Break. She then went on to veejay hosting duties on VH1, and after four years, she hosted her own show on the music channel Stand Up Spotlight, featuring up-and-coming comics. Over the next few years, Rosie O'Donnel took roles in the films:

  • A League of Their Own
  • Sleepless in Seattle
  • Another Stakeout
  • The Flinstones

Eventually, she decided that her filming schedule was too difficult on her adopted children and returned to television in 1996 with her own talk show. The Rosie O'Donnell Show was incredibly popular during its six year run, garnering the comedienne various awards including an Emmy Award. After leaving the talk-show circuit, O'Donnell focused on her personal life and returned to television in 2007 as a host on The View.
