Schools on Facebook

From LoveToKnow SocialNetworking

One of the most impressive things about Facebook is the fact that it's so easy to meet people that you knew long ago, and that aspect of the site comes from the fact that there are so many schools on Facebook.

The Success of Schools on Facebook

The reason Facebook seems to work so well, and is experiencing so much growth, is the very powerful way that it's able to spread through real social networks like wildfire. One of the reasons MySpace saw so much success through the years is because most kids in high school discovered it, shared how "cool" it was with friends, and then encouraged others to use it. In time and through word of mouth, the population of the MySpace user base expanded. With Facebook, the same is now happening, but it's now happening at an exponential pace. Part of that success comes from the fact that Facebook appeals not only to those in high school, but also to people in college and even throughout professional and business organizations. However, the most significant growth segment of Facebook comes from people reuniting with old friends that they knew well in high school and college.

How Facebook Works

Facebook is an excellent way to find people you knew in school because of two aspects of the site. The first part of what makes Facebook work is the fact that when you add one or two people to your "friends" list and then comment on their walls, everyone who is on their friends list can see your comment. The odds are very good that if you were friends with that person in school, then a fair majority of people on that person's friends list knows you too. In just the first few days of being on Facebook, you'll find that a whole multitude of people send you requests to become your friend. In most cases, these will be people who you were good friends with and would love to get back in touch with, in which case you can accept the friend request. However in some cases it could be a person who was probably pretty mean to you, or someone who you want nothing to do with, in which case you can simply ignore the request. The best thing about Facebook is that you decide who gets to see your profile and comments and who doesn't.

Finding Schools on Facebook

The other characteristic of Facebook that allows you to grow your network of friends significantly is the fact that you can search not only by name or e-mail address, but also by company or school. When you're logged onto your Facebook profile, follow these steps to find a network of former school friends.

  1. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page and click on "Find Friends."
  2. The next page offers several options including finding people by email address, from your IM list, or even people Facebook thinks you may know based on information from your profile. This will include "Search for people" search links at the bottom of the schools or companies you listed working for.
  3. Click on one of the links that read "Find classmates from..." at the bottom under "Search for People."
  4. Scroll through the long list of students to find your friends from that school. You can change the graduation year on this page as well. #If you want to search additional school networks not shown here, click on "More Search Options."
  5. On the next page, you can search for people by name or email, school name, or company name.

Keeping Your Facebook Networks Alive

One of the things that makes Facebook so fun to use isn't only the fact that you can find old friends from school, but there are also countless ways to communicate and interact with them. Facebook offers applications in the form of games, notes and images you can send people as "gifts," a private messaging system, and even a chat tool where you can chat with your friends. The way to keep your Facebook profile interesting is by updating your "wall" often with notes, links and status updates, and by reading and commenting on your friends' walls often.

Final Words

Once you get started searching through the school networks on Facebook and adding friends to your friends list, it won't take long for you to start experiencing the magic of Facebook. This amazing social network can take you from a life with few friends or personal contacts, to a daily schedule where you can stay in constant communication with a whole list of people who you grew up with and felt very close to. For that reason, Facebook is quickly becoming the number one website on the Internet that's truly bringing giant networks of people together every day.
