Social Networking Statistics
Anyone who is interested in the recent developments in social networking should look at social networking statistics. Gaining an understanding of these statistics can help you plan your online business strategy. Additionally, it can help you make a choice about which networks to join, and how to present yourself in the best light. Furthermore, most social network sites eventually face some sort of challenge. In some cases, these challenges could have been predicted by viewing the current social networking statistics.
So why is this important? If you are using social networks to market a specific product, knowledge of the network's growth, popularity, demographics and applications can help you decide which one would is most suitable. If you're trying to find old friends, the demographics of a specific network will assist you in your search. For example, say you're searching for your best friend from high school, and you attended during the 1960s. You'd probably have better luck on Eons than MySpace. You might even try Facebook, which is gradually being used in the same manner as Classmates.
Social Networking Statistics for Facebook
Up until now, Facebook was the exclusive domain of college students. However, due to some interesting changes, Facebook is now giving Myspace a run for its money. Perhaps this is because you no longer need a college email address to open a Facebook account. According to Jeremiah Owyang, senior analyst at Forrester, Facebook has over 60 million active users. Since January of 2007, over 250,000 new members register for Facebook on a daily basis.
Receiving over 65 billion page views each month, Facebook is the sixth most trafficked site in the US. There are over 14 million photos uploaded to Facebook each day. Additionally, there are over six million active user groups on the website. Over 7,000 applications have been built on Facebook, and over 80 percent of Facebook's members have used at least one of these.
MySpace Statistics
Owyang's January 2008 study also explored the statistics of MySpace. With over 110 million active users, MySpace is the most trafficked website in cyberspace. MySpace boasts:
- 14 billion comments on the website
- 50 million mails each day
- 10 billion friendships
- 1.5 billion images
- 60,000 videos uploaded each day
- Over 8 million recording artists
Do Ads on Social Networks Really Work?
Sadly, statistics say otherwise. According to an article on Adotas, social network users tend to ignore ads. Apparently, social network members have a click-through rate of 57 percent, as opposed to 79 percent of all Internet users. Additionally, the ads featured on social network sites have an 11 percent purchase rate. In contrast, 23 percent of web users will purchase items online.
Fortunately, the situation is not as grim as it seems. According to a study entitled "Harnessing the Power of Blogs," in the past four years, there has been a 300 percent increase in blog readership. Additionally, 25 percent of these readers say that they trust ads on blogs more than they trust ads on social networking websites. In comparison, only 19 percent of these readers will trust the ads on social networking websites.
