About Twas the Night Before Christmas
Twas the Night Before Christmas, also called A Visit from St. Nicholas, was written by Clement Clarke Moore in 1822. It was the first time Christmas and St. Nicholas, the patron saint of children, had ever been associated with reindeer and a sleigh. After it was published in a local newspaper in 1823, it became an instant success, and to this day, has been a traditional reading for children and families on Christmas Eve.
Images Associated with the Poem
Before the poem was written, Christmas was mainly seen as a religious holiday, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Also on this holiday each year, St. Nicholas would bring toys to good boys and girls. However, after the poem was released, St. Nicholas transformed into the Santa Claus you know and love now: "He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf..."
Today, Twas the Night Before Christmas conjures up all sort of traditional holiday images including:
- Jolly ol' Santa Claus
- Reindeer
- Snow-covered house
- Stockings hung by the chimney
- Presents under a Christmas tree
- Children sleeping with "sugar-plums" in their dreams
- Holiday-decorated houses
These images are what make great backgrounds on MySpace profiles. Through their own accord or by downloading what others have created, users can change from the cookie-cutter style of a MySpace profile and design one to have this traditional Christmas theme.
