View Facebook Profile Pictures
From LoveToKnow SocialNetworking
Get an inside view of your friends' lives when you view Facebook profile pictures, and then share your own favorite snapshots.
Viewing Profiles – The Basics
You must have a Facebook account to view Facebook profile pictures. You can join for free, and the only personal information you need to provide is your full name, e-mail address and date of birth. Once you have signed in to your account, you must also add someone as a friend to view his or her images. After you have added a friend, click on "View Photos of Username" directly under his or her main picture, or access them from the photos tab.
Downloads to View Facebook Profile Pictures
There are a number of user-created programs and scripts that attempt to circumvent the official process for viewing photos. For instance, Facebook View Photo in Album allows you to view photos of friends that are posted in non-friends' albums. As the comments on this script post show, creating additions to Facebook is an inexact science requiring much tweaking and testing. It may or may not be worth it to you in the end to work through the bugs in the hopes of seeing a few more images. You should also be careful when downloading programs or scripts. Only download from sites you trust, and use a virus scanner before opening any file.
Official applications have also been created to enhance your viewing experience. Some add functionality, such as PhotoBook, an image browser designed for Mac users. It allows you to more easily view your friends' photos, create slideshows, and import images to iPhoto. Others are just for fun. The Mozer is hosted on the Facebook site and creates a mosaic from your friends' profile pictures (You must be a registered member to access information about this application).
Adding Your Own Profile Pictures
Now that you've learned how to view Facebook profile pictures from others, you're probably interested in learning how to share your own images online.
- As a new user, you should see a link to "Upload a profile picture" directly underneath the question mark image placeholder on your profile page. Click this link to go to the image upload page.
- Click the Choose button to select any picture from your computer. It must be no larger than 4 MB and saved as a JPG, PNG or GIF file.
- Affirm that you have the right to post the image online and are not violating any copyright regulations in doing so.
- Affirm that your image does not violate the site's Terms of Use.
- Click Upload Picture, and the image will be added to the site and become your face to the online world.
- If you would like to upload additional pictures, click on the Photos link in the Applications sidebar.
Selecting Appropriate Pictures
You may think your bikini photo says you're fun-loving and carefree. However, the human resources manager of the company you just landed an interview with might not feel the same way. Before uploading any image to Facebook, think about how a future employer or even a family member might view it. Once you've posted a snapshot online, it's out of your hands. How would you feel if that spring break photo ended up on a Girls Gone Wild-style site for the world to see? Overall, it's much safer to leave provocative photos off of your personal profile.
Evidence of underage drinking in profile photos has also been a source of contention. An article in the University of Tennessee Chattanooga student newspaper warns that the UTC chief of police, "look[s] on Facebook all the time for potential criminal acts including underage drinking." A Seattle Post-Intelligencer story tells of a college student receiving a citation after housing officials viewed Facebook profile photos from a Super Bowl party in his apartment. This is another case where you never know who may be looking, so it's better to keep all photos of questionable or downright illegal activity out of your photos.
